Strand Test Says It All

A strand test is to see how your hair will react to the bleach and peroxide. Doing a strand test tells you how long you will need to leave your bleach mixture in your hair.

Step 1

Pull your hair up to the top of your head than clip it with a clip. Take a small amount of the hair from the back. Section off about an inch of your hair at the bottom close to your hair-line. Clip off any excess hair away from your test strand.

Step 2

Let test strand dangle down. Get a peace of ten foil. Cut it to the same length of your hair.

Step 3

Mix your solutions according to directions. Never use a metal bowl or spoon to stir the bleach and peroxide.

Step 4

Slide ten foil under your test strand than paint the bleach on the section of hair evenly and thick to ensure you gets great coverage of bleach on your test strand.

Step 5

Fold the ten foil over on both sides than gently fold the bottom. This makes it easy to check your hair.

Step 6

Now start timing your hair. Wait 10 minutes open foil slightly to see if your hair is passed the orange stage. If not leave in a few minutes than check again when your hair turns to a tannish yellow color. Remove tent foil check the time. See how long it took for your test strand to process. Write down how long the time was so you do not forget.

Step 7

Rinse out all your hair. Blow-dry your hair until hair is completely dry.

Step 8

Pull out a strand of hair from the top of your head. It's exposed to the sun and other elements which makes it the most damaged and the weakest hair. Your going to compare your weakest hair with your now bleached hair.

Step 9

Pull out a strand of your bleached hair. First take the hair you pulled out of the top of your head and hold each end tightly. Pull hair until it breaks. Pay attentions to how hard or easy your hair was to break. Do the same with the bleached hair. This is call an elasticity test.

When you should not bleach your hair.
  • Hair starts smoking
  • Hair is already chemically burned.
  • When frizzy and brittle
  • Skin is burning or irritated
In most cases there is no negative effects from bleaching your hair. If you already have chemicals in your hair just pay closer attention
